Anders, schwedischer Astronom, * Uppsala 27. 11. 1701, ✝ ebenda 25. 4. 1744; seit 1730 Professor in Uppsala; schlug bei einem Studienaufenthalt in Paris der Académie des sciences die Gradmessung in Lappland als Parallelunternehmen zu der von P. Bouguer durchgeführten Peruexpedition vor und nahm 1736-37 an der zu diesem Zweck unternommenen, von P. L. M. de Maupertuis geleiteten Lapplandexpedition teil, die die Abplattung der Erde bestätigte. Celsius wurde v. a. durch die 1742 von ihm vorgeschlagene, heute nach ihm benannte 100-teilige Thermometerskala bekannt (Celsiusskala, Grad Celsius); er nahm jedoch den Siedepunkt des Wassers als Nullpunkt und bezeichnete den Gefrierpunkt mit 100 º; erst Celsius von Linné kehrte die Skala um. Bei seinen Beobachtungen des Polarlichts bemerkte Celsius als Erster den Zusammenhang mit den Störungen des erdmagnetischen Feldes. Er bestimmte auch erstmals mit messtechnischen Mitteln die Helligkeit der Sterne.
